Central Nicoya Peninsula Surf Guide

Located on the Pacific Coast, the Nicoya Peninsula is a largest peninsula of Costa Rica. It is separated from the mainland by the gulf of Central Nicoya Peninsula Surf GuideNicoya. It features two major provinces: Guanacaste in the north and Puntarenas in the south. The peninsula is blessed with stretches of white sand beaches, sublime scenery and numerous opportunities for aquatic and terrestrial sports. In the recent years, Nicoya Peninsula has become a very popular destination for tropical holidays among backpackers, couples, families, sport and nature enthusiasts. Activities such as snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving, sportfishing, deep-sea fishing, sea kayaking, whale watching, and sailing attract thousands of people from all over the globe.

Surf Breaks

Talking of sports, the central region of Nicoya Peninsula has some great surf points. They are:

Playa Samara

Samara is a tropical town located south to Nicoya Peninsula and west of the San Jose in Guanacaste Province. Although sportfishing is mainly practiced here, other activities like horseback riding, surfing, paragliding, scuba diving and snorkeling are also big. Talking of surfing, the beach is bordered by consistent waves throughout the years. Playa Samara is an ideal place to learn surfing. The waves are gentle and smooth offering a perfect base for beginners and a fun one for seasoned surfers. The beach is usually crowd free both on weekends and weekdays.

Playa Carillo

Playa Carrillo is a spectacular beach located south of Playa Samara in Guanacaste Province. Carrillo has become a popular tourist destination particularly among young backpackers. It offers a great platform for snorkeling, sport fishing, swimming and surfing. Carrillo is not a great surf spot. The waves are mostly flat because the coast is protected from the swells. For good surfable waves, swells need to come from the North and Northwest direction. The best time to surf is between the months of December and March.

Playa Camaronal

Playa Camaronal has some of the biggest waves in the area. It features beach breaks and rivermouths that break to the left and right over a sandy bottom. The best time to surf is between the months of December and March.

Punta Islita

Punta Islita is found south of Playa Camaronal. The beach has smaller waves break onto a coastal inlet. The surf spot is very easy to reach and has fun waves suitable for all sorts of surfers.

Playa San Miguel

Playa San Miguel has a beach break that offers several waves peeling to the right and to the left. If you want to surf in isolation and peace then this is the beach for you! The waves are best surfed at low and upcoming tide.

Playa Coyote

Playa Coyote is a secluded horse-shoe shaped  present between two popular beaches, Playa Manzanillo and Playa Samara.  The beach mainly comprises of four parts. Playa Bejuco is on the north well known for its airport and a lavish hotel called Punta Islita Hotel, on the southern side, there is Playa San Miguel located nearby the rivermouth. Farther towards the south, completely isolated beaches, Playa Caletas and Rio Bongo, can be found. In the last few years, Playa Coyote has seen a large influx of surfers. Surfing is gradually getting popular in Playa Coyote and its nearby located breaks.Playa Coyote in Nicoya Peninsula.

Playa Caletas

Playa Caletas is found on the southwestern region of Nicoya Peninsula. The beach is an unspoiled, secluded and utterly tranquil place found just south to Coyote. It can be a bit difficult to find as its route only includes rough tracks and dirt roads. Regarded as one of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Caletas features a challenging reef break perfect for experienced surfers.
