Description

Manuel Antonio is a small coastal town located in the Central Pacific region of Costa Rica. The town has become a famous tourist attraction because of Manuel Antonio National Park. The park has a wonderful beach, Playa Espadilla, amazing wildlife and offer many activities such as sportfishing, snorkeling and hiking. Manuel Antonio is not a major surfer’s town but has some good breaks to offer. If you happen to be in the town and want to surf, you can have quite a fun time. The months from May to November offer the best conditions for surfing. The breaks are deserted during the weekdays but may get crowded on weekends.Manuel Antonio

Surf Breaks in Manuel Antonio

Playitas

Playitas is a beach break located on the northern end of Playa Espadilla. It is a semi consistent break which is best surfed at a mid to high tide when the swells are large. The waves break to the right and left over a rocky bottom. Watch out for the crocodiles.

Caldera

Caldera is a small beach break nearby Playitas. It is great for long boarders and bodyboarders. The waves create wedging barrels and pounding closeout sections. The waves break to a short right. The spot is quite dirty filled with dirt and sand. It is usually crowded.

Mar Y Sombra

It has large, strong and tubular waves that break to left and right. Good swells rise from south and southwest. Best conditions are during a mid to high tide when a swell is large.

Playa El Rey

Playa El Rey is located south of Manuel Antonio. The surf spot is very clean and deserted. It features a beach break which is very similar to Playa Hermosa. The waves break to left and right that tend to close out when the swells get big. It is best surfed at a mid to high tide.

Secret Spot

It is a reef break that offers a long, perfect right with waves riding up to 200 meters. The waves are very smooth and gentle but can only be surfed at a low tide when a big swell is picked from the south and southwest.

Bajo

Bajo is a beach break located just south of Playitas. It features a strong and powerful break with a short and left. It is best surfer at a mid to high tide when the swell is small or medium from south and southwest direction.
