Description

Playa Caletas is found on the southern Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste Province of Costa Rica. The beach is an unspoiled, secluded and utterly tranquil place found just south to Coyote. The strip of white sand beach is mostly uncrowded blessed with offshore breeze, super fun waves and picturesque location. Playa Caletas can be a bit difficult to find as its route only includes rough tracks and dirt roads. However, the heavenly beach is worth the trouble. Travelers can drive a car from Punta Islita which is about half an hour away. Playa Caletas is a vast nesting beach for leatherback turtles. These turtles are endangered species so the beach might be converted into a national reserve in near future. The shimmering shores offer plenty of awesome activities. Horseback riding, turtle tours, wildlife trips, sport fishing, kayaking and surfing are big here.

Regarded as one of the best surf beaches in Costa Rica, Playa Caletas features a challenging reef break perfect for experienced surfers. The waves are great to surf when the swells rise from Northwest, West, Southwest and South teamed up with the wind blowing from Northeast. The swells begin building up at 3 feet and can hold up to 8 feet. Best time to surf is when the tide is mid to high. The waves usually ride up to 150 meters breaking over a reef coral bottom to the right and left. Watch out for rips, undertows and currents.
