Puerto Caldera is a major port of Costa Rica located in the Central Pacific Coast close to the Golfo de Nicoya, Puntarenas. While playingPuerto Caldera Surfing a very important role in the country’s trading system, Puerto Caldera has also become a popular tourist attraction. It sits in a beautiful, unspoiled location decorated with clean shorelines, swaying trees and tall cliffs. From the port, you can go on a cruise, wave riding or simply leisure around on the beach with a chilled drink in your hands. Puerto Caldera features a protected jetty break with a fairly consistent surf. The surf breaks in both directions over a sandy bottom but favors lefts more than the rights. Clean groundswells are much more common than windswells. The waves are best ridden when the tide is low, nice swells are picked up from the south and southeast and wind blows from the east. Swells can be about 8 feet big and the waves can go up to 150 meters. The break at Puerto Caldera is suitable for all levels of surfers. On weekdays, the spot is deserted however on weekdays it can get super crowded. The water is polluted with frequent rips and undertows so be careful.

Things to do in and around Puerto Caldera

Mirador Nemacly is a paradisaical place in Cladera offering wonderful attractions and activities. It is one of the best places in Costa Rica to try out paragliding. Travelers can go on fun filled boat rides to Tortuga Island and Los Suenos. Puerto Caldera has a number of great facilities for visitors such as restaurants, accommodations, bars, gift shops and market places. Caldera is situated only a short distance away from Puntarenas and its larger towns. Travelers can easily reach the town and try out different adrenaline rushing activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, zip lining and sportfishing. Carara National Park, a nature reserve, is also nearby. It has both dry forests and tropical forests that feature a diverse wildlife including more than 400 species of birds and 2000 crocodiles. Furthermore, the park has one of the largest population of scarlet macaws. Jaco, a major surf town, is about 35 kilometers away from Puerto Caldera. The vibrant place is superb for backpackers, particularly surfers.
