Description

Ollie's Point Ollie’s Point is a popular surf spot located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica near the Nicaraguan border in Santa Rosa National Park. The hollows waves of Ollie’s Point first become popular when the surf destination was shown in a famous surf movie, Endless Summer II. After the movie was released, surfers from all over the world traveled to Costa Rica to surf its amazing waves. The point is approximately 270 kilometers away from San Jose with no road access. The destination is accessible from Playas del Coco and Playa Ocotal by a boat only and visitors have to pay the entrance fees in order to enter the park. The point break of Potero Grande was named Ollie’s Point after US Colonel Oliver North who used the area to land weapons.

Ollie’s Point is a right-hand point break at a river mouth featuring fast and hollow waves that break over a rocky bottom on the beach. The best tide movement is rising and falling tides while the best tide position is either mid or low tide. The platform is said to be ideal for long boarders and surfing condition is great throughout the year. The waves are excellent and smooth with superb consistency all year round. It has a moderate difficulty level with a number of dangerous rocks hence it is recommended that only experienced surfers ride the waves. On average days, the waves are usually 150 to 300 meters long while on a good day, the waves can reach the height of 500 meters! Swells are best raised from Southwest direction and their size normally ranges from 1 to 5 meters often reaching up to 16 feet! On weekdays, the place is almost secluded with hardly any surfers around and during the weekdays, Ollie’s Point gets very crowded. As there is only a single spot to take off from, the point becomes crowded even if there are only a few people. Also, the take off area is surrounded by rocks which results in quite a slow entry. Crowd or no crowd, there is no doubt that Ollie’s Point is one of the most fun right handed point breaks in the world to ride. The waves are big and powerful offering a very long and exhilarating ride.
