Description
Playa Camaronal is a secluded beach situated south of Playa Carillo in Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. Camaronal is a remote beach blessed with world class waves which remain consistent throughout the year. The beach is also a renowned nesting platform for Olive Ridley Sea Turtles. The beach can be accessed by taking the road to Playa Carillo and after 5 miles, heading right to Punta Islita. The beach is kind of hard to access during the rainy season when all the roads get blocked. You can reach the surf spot by renting a boat from Samara which is only 20 minutes away.
Playa Camaronal has some of the biggest waves in the area. It features beach breaks and rivermouths that break to the left and right over a sandy bottom. The surf is fast, powerful and hollow running up to 150 to 300 meters. The waves require a nice swell or else they go flat. Good swells are directed from South and Southwest direction and their size can hold up to 15 feet! Good wind direction comes from Northeast. The waves are quite strong and hollow with frequent rips and undertows hence the surf spot is only recommended to experienced surfers. The spot is best surfed at mid to high tide. One of the great things about Playa Camaronal is that it is always deserted. The best time to surf is between the months of December and March.
There is another surf spot located south of Playa Camaronal called Punta Islita. The beach has smaller waves break onto a coastal inlet. The surf spot is very easy to reach and has fun waves suitable for all sorts of surfers.
